Outside The Lab

Gamelabbers have been busy outside the office as spring draws near – check out our extracurricular activities.

Catherine - I've been rehearsing for The Circus of Epic Disproportions, the upcoming May production from Brooklyn-based Cirque This. Featuring Hula Hoop and ball juggling and acrobatics, wily animal antics, scientists, vermin, and of course a live band! Guaranteed to be Cirque This' most amazing show yet! More information (including performance times) here.

Eric - I recently spoke at the Game Developers Conference (San Francisco), South by Southwest (Austin), the American Educational Research Association conference (New York City), Game On: Finance (Toronto) and the Game Developers Exchange (Atlanta).

Patrick - I'm finishing my short stop-motion horror film called "The Ornament." Working on children's book called "Zom-body to Love," a zombie love story.

Carolina - My T-shirt design submission to Design by Humans recently won and is now up for sale- that's what I did recently!

Naomi - I've been traveling around to different cities speaking about games recently. Last weekend I was in Boston at the MIT Center for New Words, speaking about the intersection of video games, feminism, and social justice issues as part of the Women, Action, and the Media conference. A couple weeks before that I was in Austin for the South by Southwest Interactive festival, where I spoke about how people with experience working on the web could take their skills and experiences into the video game industry.

On Valentine's Day some friends and I entered a Rock Band tournament hosted by the Virgin Megastore in Union Square. Our band took first place, and we won a $500 gift certificate, a copy of Rock Band, and a bunch of other electronics from the store. I also started playing the drums for real - which turned out to be a lot easier after spending so much time playing Rock Band! I recently was asked to join a country rock band called 77 & Granite, and we are working on recording songs on the weekend. True weird stories of videogaming: you can play a game with drumming, and become a real drummer as a result.

Thor – My essay "The Casual Crush" appeared in the March issue of Game Informer.

Scott - I spoke at I-Con out at Stony Brook University, doing a workshop on Game Design (using the Grow-a-Game cards) and speaking on several panels about the game industry.
